Admissions Process Overview
United States Merchant Marine Academy
The admissions process to the United States Merchant Marine Academy is a multiple step, time-line intensive, process. The application process begins the month of APRIL, JUNIOR YEAR, of High School. The applicant is responsible for assuring a complete “admissions file”, including Congressional Nomination, is submitted no later than the March 1st deadline of the anticipated year of admission to The Academy. Example: Class of 2010 candidates must have their complete Admissions Application and Congressional Nomination submitted prior to the March 1st deadline to be considered for “Appointment” by the USMMA Admissions Office.
Eligibility
- U. S. CITIZEN
- AGE 17 BUT NO OLDER THAN 25 YEARS ON JULY 1ST OF ADMISSION YEAR
- REQUEST AND COMPLETE A THREE (3) PART ACADEMY APPLICATION
- REQUEST AND COMPLETE A CONGRESSIONAL NOMINATION FORM
- QUALIFY SCHOLASTICALLY
- MEET REQUIREMENTS FOR APPOINTMENT AS U.S. NAVAL RESERVE / MERCHANT MARINE RESERVE MIDSHIPMEN
- BE OF GOOD MORAL CHARACTER

- Take College Prep or Advanced Placement Classes in Science and Math.
- REQUEST USMMA APPLICATION (ON-LINE) AFTER APRIL 15TH
- REQUEST CONGRESSIONAL NOMINATION APPLICATION AFTER APRIL 15TH
- REGISTER FOR SPRING SAT/ACT EXAM (HS GUIDANCE OFFICER)
- Take AP Exams in Math and Science
- ADDRESS THE TWO APPLICATIONS PROPMTLY! Guidance Officer does Part 3!
- MAINTAIN A HIGH LEVEL OF PHYSICAL FITNESS
- MAINTAIN THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF GRADES

- 1. REGISTER FOR 1ST FALL SAT/ACT EXAM (HS GUIDANCE OFFICER)
- 2. COMMUNICATE WITH HS GUIDANCE OFFICER RE: PART 3 OF ACADEMY APPLICATION AND CONGRESSIONAL NOMINATION REQUIREMENTS (GUIDANCE PLAYS A MAJOR ROLE HERE!!) See #4
- 3. BE PREPARED FOR YOUR PHYSICAL FITNESS TEST (PAE)! GET THE FORM FROM ACADEMY WEB SITE AND PLAN TEST WITH YOUR HIGH SCHOOL PHYSICAL ED INSTRUCTOR. BE SURE YOU ARE IN VERY GOOD CONDITION!
- 4. CONGRESSIONAL NONIMINATING BOARD INTERVIEW DAY (NOVEMBER IN MANCHESTER)
- 5. COMPLETE THE DoDMERB MEDICAL AND EYE EXAMINATIONS
(APPOINTMENT WILL BE ASSIGNED BY DoDMERB)
- 6. COMPLETE THE ELECTRONIC FORM FOR SECURITY CLEARANCE AS DIRECTED
- 7. ALL ACADEMY ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS, INCLUDING CONGRESSIONAL NOMINATION, DUE NO LATER THAN MARCH 1ST DEADLINE AT THE ACADEMY ADMISSIONS OFFICE
